Choir Levels

> Back to About Us

CCCC offers an age appropriate, multi-level program which trains and inspires young singers to appreciate and perform choral music. Our professional artistic staff lead six levels of choral groups. The challenges of musicianship and repertoire increase incrementally with each ensemble. Through rehearsals and performances, boys and girls in the Debut Choir, Boys Choir, Apprentice Choir, Premiere Choir, and Concert Choir and the more experienced Advanced Vocal Ensemble enjoy a high level of accomplishment, make lasting friendships, and enjoy a nurturing and challenging learning environment.

Through such activities as finding the singing voice, movement and rhythm activities, and singing age-appropriate fine repertoire, children grow and develop skills that enhance broad-based learning skills in many areas. They perform in both season concerts, as well as some community events. Rehearsals are offered in both San Luis Obispo at United Methodist Church on Tuesdays from 4:15 - 5:15 pm and in Atascadero in room 105 at Fine Arts Academy on Wednesdays from 4:15 - 5:15 pm and are directed by Sarah Broomell and Anne Olson.

Boys Choir

The Boys Choir is open to boys in grades 3-10 and no prior singing experience is necessary. No audition is required, but directors will check vocal potential, harmonic, rhythmic and listening skills during the first few weeks. This choir will provide boys a chance to explore and perform with other like-minded boys. The Boys Choir participate in the major concerts in San Luis Obispo and North County, a Choral Festival, and some community events including a performance at the Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 pm. Boys Choir members also participate in monthly Super Saturday rehearsals. First and second grade boys are invited to join our Debut Choirs.

Premiere Choir

The Premiere Choir is open to girls in approximately grades 5-8. A friendly audition is required to check vocal potential, harmonic, rhythmic and listening skills.  Prior music experience is recommended at this level.  The Premiere Choir performs with both the Apprentice Choir and the more advanced Concert Choir.  This choir serves to prepare the singer for the larger musical demands of the Concert Choir.  Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00pm.  The Premiere Choir is directed by Beth Klemm.

Apprentice Choir

The Apprentice Choir is open to children in grades 3-6 and no prior singing experience is necessary.  A friendly audition is required to check vocal potential, harmonic, rhythmic and listening skills.  Apprentice Choir offers both the beginning singers and the more musically mature singers a quality experience.  The Apprentice Choir participates in the major concerts, a Choral Festival, and some community events. Occasionally they sing with local adult groups.  Rehearsals are from 4:00-5:15 pm on Tuesdays at United Methodsit Church or from 4:00-5:15 pm Wednesdays at Fine Arts Academy in Atascadero. Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is an auditioned choir and is open to children in grades 6-12. The audition determines if the student shows vocal independence, and is musically ready to sing in this higher-level musical ensemble. The Concert Choir often represents CCCC at performances with local adult groups such as the SLO Symphony, SLO Vocal Arts Ensemble, Pacific Repertory Opera, and Cuesta Master Chorale. Concert Choir sings in the major concerts, community events, Choral Festivals and tours. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 pm, as well as monthly Super Saturdays. Their director is Melody Svennungsen.

Level advancement is determined by a number of considerations including sight singing and vocal skills, commitments to rehearsals and performances, and the ability to meet the challenge of increasing standards and difficulty in literature and repertoire. It is not unusual for a student to remain in the same level for several years, depending on their age and ability.
